Wanting to “maintain creative freedom” and “produce work we care about,” Graham Barbour (Media Studies ’21) and Phineas Alexander (Studio Art ’21) co-founded Sly Dog Creative. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the media production company offers “a fresh take on film and photo.” Recent projects have involved producing music videos and content for higher education, as well as writing and directing short films.
Graham and Phineas also recently hosted Look Closer, a film festival at the historic Byrd Theatre in Richmond that featured an array of short films from aspiring filmmakers and a discussion panel with acclaimed directors, Kevin Jerome Everson, Rick Alverson, and Yossera Bouchtia. When asked what prepared him for his work in the independent film industry, Graham cited coursework with Media Studies Professors Wyatt Andrews and William Little, his minor in Studio Art, and his time as a reporter for WUVA, each of which helped him “gain an appreciation for the practice and artistic aspects of filmmaking.” Looking to the future, Graham plans to move to New York to expand the footprint of Sly Dog Creative.
